Renascence
Waldemar Bastos nasceu na fronteira de Angola
com o Congo em 1954. Começou a cantar e a compor desde
muito cedo. Em 1982, no decurso de uma visita a Portugal,
tomou a difícil decisão de não regressar
ao seu país, então atravessando uma longa guerra
civil. Viveu na Alemanha, França e Brasil, onde gravou
o seu primeiro álbum, Estamos Juntos. Em 1985 fixou-se
em Lisboa, e em 1990 gravou Angola Minha Namorada.
Um novo CD, Pitanga Madura, editado em 1992, foi
descoberto numa discoteca lisboeta por David Byrne. Entusiasmado
com o que ouviu, contratou Waldemar Bastos para a sua editora,
a Luaka Bop. Aí gravou Pretaluz, produzido
por Arto Lindsay. O disco firmou o seu autor na cena internacional
da world music, abrindo-lhe as portas para se apresentar
na América, na Europa e no Extremo Oriente.
Em Abril de 2003 regressou a Angola pela primeira vez em muitos
anos, em celebração do fim da guerra civil.
Esse regresso, o facto de entretanto ter completado 50 anos
(“Meio século obriga-nos a parar e a olhar para
trás na nossa vida. Mas também temos sonhos
para realizar”), a reflexão que fez sobre a sua
música, levaram-no à gravação
de um novo disco, Renascence, na editora holandesa
World Connection.
O concerto desta noite baseia-se nesse trabalho, que não
só resume a trajectória da sua vida, como imprime
uma nova maturidade e profundidade à sua música.
Os seus poemas revelam os seus sonhos de harmonia e fraternidade.
A sua música define-a não como africana nem
europeia, mas ambas “ao mesmo tempo e muito mais”.

Waldemar Bastos was born in the border region
between Angola and Congo, in 1954. He began singing and composing
very early in life. In 1982, during a visit to Portugal, he
made the difficult decision of not returning to his native
country, then enduring a long civil war. He lived in Germany,
France and Brazil, where he recorded his first album Estamos
Juntos. In 1985, he moved to Lisbon and in 1990 he recorded
Angola Minha Namorada. Through a new album, Pitanga Madura,
released in 1992, he was discovered in a Lisbon record store
by David Byrne. Excited by what he had heard, he signed Waldemar
Bastos for his record company, Luaka Bop. There, Bastos recorded
Pretaluz, produced by Arto Lindsay. The record brought
Waldemar Bastos to the forefront of the international world
music scene, paving the way for presentations in America,
Europe and the Far East.
In April 2003 he returned to Angola for the first time in
many years, in celebration of the end of the civil war. This
return, the fact that he had turned 50 in the meantime (“Half
a century makes us stop and look back on our lives. But we
still also have dreams to fulfil”), the reflection he
undertook regarding his music, all of this lead him to record
a new album, Renascence, with the Dutch record label
World Connection.
Tonight’s concert is based on this work, which not only
sums up the course of his life but also conveys a fresh maturity
and depth to his music. His poems reveal his dreams of harmony
and fraternity. He defines his music as neither African nor
European but both “at the same time and much more”.
