O Atlas Group foi um
projecto desenvolvido por Walid Raad entre 1989 e 2004 para pesquisar
e documentar a história contemporânea do Líbano,
com uma ênfase particular nas guerras de 1975 e 1990. Raad
encontrou e produziu documentos áudio, visuais e literários
que convocam e desvendam essa história. Os documentos foram
preservados no Arquivo do Atlas Group, localizado em Beirute e Nova
Iorque.
O trabalho de Walid Raad inclui até à data instalações
em vários mediums, performance, vídeo
e fotografia, assim como ensaios literários. O seu trabalho
tem sido mostrado em numerosas exposições colectivas
nos Estados Unidos, na Europa e no Médio Oriente, nomeadamente,
na Bienal de Whitney (Nova Iorque, 2002), na Documenta 11 (Kassel,
2002), na Bienal de Veneza (2003), ou em Home Works (Beirute, 2005).
O projecto Atlas Group tem sido apresentado em numerosas exposições
individuais, nomeadamente, na Art Gallery of York University em
Toronto (2004), na FACT em Liverpool (2005), na The Kitchen Art
Gallery em Nova Iorque (2006), no Hamburger Banhof em Berlim (2006),
na Henry Art Gallery em Seattle (2007) e no Museo Tamayo na Cidade
do México (2007).
Walid Raad nasceu no Líbano (1967) e vive em Nova Iorque.
É professor associado na Cooper Union em Nova Iorque e membro
da Arab Image Foundation (Beirute/Nova Iorque).

The Atlas Group was a project undertaken by Walid
Raad between 1989 and 2004 to research and document the contemporary
history of Lebanon, with particular emphasis on the wars of 1975
to 1990. Raad found and produced audio, visual, and literary documents
that shed light on this history. The documents were preserved in
The Atlas Group Archive which is located in Beirut and New York.
Walid Raad’s works to date include mixed media installations,
performance, video and photography, as well as literary essays.
Raad’s works have been shown at The Whitney Biennial (New
York, 2002), Documenta 11 (Kassel, 2002), the Venice Biennale (2003),
Home Works (Beirut, 2005) and numerous other museums and venues
in Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Exhibitions of The
Atlas Group project include the Art Gallery of York University in
Toronto (2004), FACT in Liverpool (2005), The Kitchen Art Gallery
in New York (2006), the Hamburger Banhof in Berlin (2006), the Henry
Art Gallery in Seattle (2007) and the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City
(2007). His books include The Truth Will Be Known When The Last
Witness Is Dead, and My Neck Is Thinner Than A Hair.
Walid Raad was born in Lebanon and lives in New York. He is Associate
Professor in Cooper Union (New York) and also a member of the Arab
Image Foundation (Beirut/New York). |
