Two and a half years after presenting a large-scale exhibition of Bruno Pacheco (Lisbon, 1974), Culturgest will once again be displaying his work, this time at its exhibition space in Porto. While that first exhibition made a decisive contribution towards establishing Bruno Pacheco’s reputation as one of today’s leading Portuguese artists, the one that is now being held serves to confirm (as if such were necessary) the extraordinary vitality of his work over the last few years. Since 2005, he has alternated his everyday painting activity – embodied in the form of generally large-sized oil paintings on canvas, as well as other smaller ones of acrylic on paper – with the production of objects that, in many cases, allude ironically to the artistic practice and the status of the work of art, while, at the same time, incorporating references to defining moments in the history of contemporary art. In this latest exhibition, Bruno Pacheco combines a work composed of sixteen paintings on paper repeating the same motif, submitted to a vast range of formal solutions, with three sculptures that simultaneously continue and expand upon the ideas and concerns that he has been developing in his three-dimensional work.
