Queda e contra-queda, 2010

Esta exposição toma o seu título de uma série de desenhos sobre fotocópia, datados de 2003, que são agora mostrados pela primeira vez. Na realidade, o que se apresenta não são os desenhos originais, mas a sua reprodução ampliada, trazendo a imagem para a escala real do espectador. Alexandre Estrela entrega-se à exploração serial de uma mesma imagem – corpos em queda representados metonimicamente por capacetes de paraquedista, aos quais estão acopladas câmaras de vídeo e fotográficas – para abordar questões relacionadas com a gravidade, o peso, a velocidade e a desorientação perceptiva. Idênticas questões são exploradas na outra obra incluída na exposição, Queda e contra-queda (2010), a “animação” de uma imagem estática – um desenho que representa dois movimentos que se contrariam – por meio da projecção de luz e de uma banda sonora síncrona, resultando numa intensa experiência perceptiva. A extraordinária experimentação intrínseca à prática de Alexandre Estrela manifesta-se na sinestesia e combinação entre diferentes mediums, até no modo como o artista provoca a invasão de um determinado medium por outro que tradicionalmente lhe é alheio.

The title of this exhibition derives from a series of drawings on photocopies, dating from 2003, which are now being shown for the first time. In actual fact, what is being shown is not the original drawings, but an enlarged reproduction of them, so that the image is transformed to the real scale of the spectator. In these drawings, Alexandre Estrela devotes his energies to the serial exploration of the same image – falling bodies represented metonymically by parachutist’s helmets, to which are attached video and photographic cameras – in order to examine questions relating to gravity, weight, velocity and perceptual disorientation. Identical questions are explored in the other work included in the exhibition, Fall and counter-fall (2010), namely the “animation” of a static image – a drawing that represents two movements that contradict one another – through the projection of light and a synchronous soundtrack, resulting in an intense perceptual experience. The extraordinary experimentation that is intrinsic in Alexandre Estrela’s artistic practice is clearly seen in the synaesthesia and combination between different mediums, and even in the way in which the artist provokes the invasion of a certain medium by another that is traditionally seen as alien to it.
