Foi em Los Angeles, onde se radicou em 1968, que Guy de Cointet (Paris, 1934 – Los Angeles, 1983) produziu a obra extraordinária pela qual é hoje consensualmente reconhecido no mundo da arte: uma profusa produção de desenhos, obras que tomam a forma democrática do livro, um extenso conjunto de peças teatrais (para as quais escreveu os textos, produziu objetos e dirigiu atores, na sua maioria mulheres). A retrospetiva que a Culturgest lhe dedica, Who wrote that?, é acompanhada pela apresentação de várias das suas peças teatrais. Guy de Cointet seguiu, na criação dessas peças, o método tradicionalmente usado no teatro: escrita do texto, escolha dos intérpretes, ensaios. Ao longo dos anos, o artista foi apurando um estilo muito próprio e inconfundível, pleno de artifício e de humor, caraterizado pela maneira enfática de representação (expressão verbal e gestual dos atores), pelo modo como os objetos são integrados e ativados, por um constante entrelaçamento entre o familiar, o absurdo e o enigmático. Em Five Sisters (1982), a sua última criação teatral, o artista prescinde de objetos. A iluminação assume, em contrapartida, uma importância crucial na construção dramatúrgica da peça.

It was in Los Angeles, where he had settled in 1968, that the artist Guy de Cointet (Paris, 1934 – Los Angeles, 1983) produced the extraordinary work for which he is widely recognised today in the art world: a profuse production of drawings, works that take the democratic form of the book, and an extensive set of theatre plays (for which he wrote the texts, produced objects and directed the actors, mainly women). Several of his theatre plays are presented in the framework of his retrospective exhibition at Culturgest, Who wrote that?. Over the years, the artist has developed his own inimitable style, highly refined and full of humour, constantly exploring emphatic modes of verbal and gestural expression, a very particular way of activating and integrating the objects, the intertwined relationship between the familiar, the absurd and the enigmatic.
