Belén Uriel (Madrid, 1974) licenciou-se na Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade Complutense de Madrid e fez o mestrado de belas artes no Chelsea College of Art and Design, em Londres, cidade onde viveu e desenvolveu o seu trabalho entre setembro de 2003 e julho de 2008. Nos últimos oito anos, tem vivido e trabalhado a maior parte do tempo em Lisboa, com estadias intercalares em Londres. Duas exposições individuais em Lisboa deram a ver o trabalho de uma artista chegada à maturidade e com uma rara sensibilidade para a escultura: Pedra, papel e tesoura, no Pavilhão Branco do Museu da Cidade, entre março e maio de 2013; e Lama no sapato, no Parkour, durante três dias de novembro de 2014. As obras aí mostradas, bem como as obras recentes que integram a sua exposição recente no Museu de Wiesbaden, na Alemanha, revelam um léxico e uma sintaxe perfeitamente consolidados, grande rigor e subtileza na manipulação dos materiais, na construção de formas e superfícies, na definição de dimensões e escalas. As obras de Belén Uriel estão frequentemente indexadas a objetos reais (por exemplo, elementos de arquitetura ou de mobiliário), transformando-os, de forma tão radical quanto subtil, pelos meios e processos da escultura (da arte). Combinando trabalho já mostrado noutras circunstâncias com trabalho recente e inédito, a exposição na Culturgest recobre a prática artística de Belén Uriel nos últimos anos, na sua fase mais produtiva e entusiasmante.

Belén Uriel (Madrid, 1974) took a master's degree in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design, in London, where she lived and developed her work between September 2003 and July 2008. Two solo exhibitions in Lisbon have made it very clear that Belén Uriel is an artist who has already reached full maturity and displays a rare sensibility for sculpture: Stone, Paper, Scissors, held in the White Pavilion of the Museu da Cidade, in Spring 2013; and Mud on the Shoe, at Parkour, in November 2014. The works shown there, as well as the recent works included in her recent exhibition at the Museum Wiesbaden, in Germany, reveal a perfectly consolidated lexicon and syntax, great rigour and subtlety in the manipulation of materials, the construction of forms and surfaces, and the definition of dimensions and scales. The works are frequently indexed to real objects (for example, elements from architecture or furniture), transforming them in a way that is both radical and subtle, through the means and processes of sculpture (of art). The exhibition at Culturgest revisits the artistic practice of Belén Uriel over the last few years, in her most productive phase, combining work that has already been shown in other circumstances with her more recent and previously unexhibited pieces.
